Potty training Floki was something I was very excited to do when we brought him home in 2021. He is now almost 2 years old and refuses to poop in the toilet. He will, however, pee. It was the Cat’s urine that I felt was so stinky depending on what your cat eats. Floki is on a raw diet and I believe that I can hardly smell his poop. It’s nothing like my old cat, his poop was stiiiiinky!
How did we start training Floki? A lot of time and patience that is for sure. Here is a list of things we used to accomplish the potty training:
-
Catnip;
-
Cat treats;
-
Litter Box;
-
Litter;
-
A lot of patience.
With the CitiKitty System, you start out with a full tray with flushable kitty litter sprinkled with catnip. Every time he used the bathroom, I would reward him with treats. Floki is very food motivated so I had no troubles there. Once he started to use the toilet regularly, I removed the litter box. Each week you remove a ring until there are no more rings and voila, your cat is potty trained. I wish it were that simple.
I didn’t take into account that his balance isn’t as great pooping as it was peeing. I thought I was successful until he started to poop in the bathtub or in the sink. So I started over. I used a full tray with catnip again, got him comfortable with pooping on the toilet. Rewarded him with treats. Started to remove the rings until there were no more rings to remove and then it happened again, he pooped in the sink. Augh.
After the third time trying, I have come to accept that he will not poop in the toilet. If anyone has any other suggestions on how to get him to poop in the toilet, I am all ears.
I have now resorted to having a covered litter box right beside the toilet on the main floor. That is where he poops. He is comfortable peeing in most of the toilets in the house. I just need to remember to flush it when I hear him pee.
Does he track litter through the bathroom? A little but barely any. I hardly buy cat litter anymore as we don’t go through it very quickly. So I am saving money there.
It’s pretty awesome having a cat that will pee in the toilet. So even though I failed to completely toilet train Floki, I still feel like we are winning. Feel free to send me any questions. I’d be happy to answer them as much as I can.
